Frequently Asked HVAC Questions

What is the proper indoor humidity level?

Humidity plays a big role in the quality of your indoor air, and too much or too little can have a negative impact on your health and home. For best results, it is recommended to aim for a relative indoor humidity level of between 45 and 55% during the summer months and 25 to 35% during the winter.

An environment that is too humid can encourage the growth of mold and mildew, and in the summer months, your air conditioner and dehumidifier can help to reduce the amount of moisture in your indoor air.

If the humidity in your home is too low, it may cause dry skin, sore throats, and allow viruses and other airborne toxins to thrive. A humidifier can help to raise the humidity to acceptable levels and restore comfort and air quality throughout the heating season.

How can I lower my energy bills?

Increase the energy efficiency of your home with these tips:

  • Seal air leaks around doors and windows, and have your ductwork inspected to prevent the loss of conditioned air.
  • Install a programmable thermostat to automatically regulate the temperature of your home based on your family’s schedule.
  • Replace incandescent bulbs with energy-saving LEDs or compact fluorescent bulbs.
  • Consider making the switch to a geothermal heating and cooling system.
  • Schedule regular maintenance for your HVAC system to ensure optimal performance and efficiency year-round.

What is AFUE?

AFUE is an acronym for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency ratio and is used to identify the efficiency rating of your furnace or water heater. AFUE is represented as a percentage, and the higher the AFUE, the more efficient the appliance. For example, with an AFUE of 80%, 80% of the fuel consumed is used to heat your home, while 20% is lost at some point during the combustion process.

Why do I need preventive maintenance?

The best way to ensure the reliable, efficient performance of your HVAC system is with regular maintenance, including the inspection, cleaning, and tuning of your equipment. We recommend preventive maintenance each spring and fall to prepare for the seasons ahead, and we encourage our customers to join our Signature Comfort Club to enjoy benefits such as:

  • Lower energy bills
  • Fewer repairs
  • Improved air quality
  • Prolonged lifespan of HVAC equipment
  • And more!

How do I know if it’s time to replace my HVAC system?

Towards the end of its usable lifespan, your HVAC system starts to lose efficiency and parts will begin to breakdown more frequently. If your HVAC system is 12 years or older, is unable to maintain your desired level of comfort, or it is costing you a fortune in repairs, we recommend HVAC replacement.

What is a ductless mini-split?

A ductless heating and cooling system allows you to control the temperature in your home without the need for ductwork. A ductless system consists of an outdoor condenser and one or more wall-mounted, indoor units. These two components are connected to each other via a conduit that runs through a small hole in the exterior wall of your home, which contains a condensate drain, refrigerant line, and power cable.

Should I zone my home?

A zoned HVAC system allows you to heat or cool each room or zone in your home individually, rather than controlling the temperature of the whole house at once. A zoned system can help you save money on the cost of energy, enhance air quality by preventing the circulation of contaminants, and increase your comfort, one room at a time.
