What is geothermal?

As you may remember from science class, “geo” means “earth” and “therme” means heat. A geothermal system uses the natural warmth found in the earth to warm and cool a home, which originates in a system of looped pipes that are buried underground. In the winter, a geothermal heat pump extracts heat from the ground and distributes it through a home’s ducts. Meanwhile, cooler air in the home is returned to the pump and rewarmed. In the summer, the process is reversed. Geothermal systems are one of the most energy efficient, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective ways to heat and cool a Pennsylvania home.

How does a heat pump work?

A standard heat pump works much like a geothermal heat pump, except that it’s not buried underground; a standard heat pump runs on electricity. It heats and cools your home using heat exchange: pushing warm air out during the summer and pulling warm air in during the winter. A heat pump can provide year-round climate control for a home—warming it in the cooler months and cooling and dehumidifying it in the warmer months. When is it time to replace my HVAC system?

As a piece of machinery, your HVAC system has a limited lifespan. Proper maintenance will help it last longer, but it will not last forever. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, homeowners should consider replacing a heat pump or air conditioner once it’s more than 10 years old, and replace a furnace once it exceeds the 15-year mark. HVAC systems tend to falter and require more frequent repairs toward the end of their lifespan. Other warning signs may surface, too. A furnace with a cracked heat exchanger must be replaced, due to it posing a fire risk and a safety hazard, since it can leak dangerous levels of carbon monoxide. Or you may notice that the system fails to warm or cool your home as it once did. What is SEER?

The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio is a number that denotes an air conditioner’s efficiency. All air conditioners manufactured in the United States are required by law to achieve a SEER of at least 13 (although the highest is now 25). You can find an air conditioner’s SEER in two places: on the yellow “Energy Guide” label, and at the top of the manufacturer’s label, near the model and serial number.

Why does SEER matter?

If you care about an air conditioner’s efficiency, then SEER matters. Just as today’s most energy-efficient cars travel farther on a tank of gas, today’s most energy-efficient air conditioners cost less money to run. And you should notice the difference on your energy bills. That said, just as energy-efficient cars usually cost more money upfront, so do many ENERGY STAR® air conditioners. What are the advantages of a programmable thermostat?

A programmable thermostat allows you to set your thermostat for a day, several days, or a week ahead of time—basically, around your daily comings and goings and while you sleep. Why pay to fully heat or cool your home when you’re not there or are asleep? Homeowners who can alter their thermostat by between 7 and 10 degrees for eight hours at a stretch—raising the temperature in the summer and lowering it in the winter—can save about 10 percent annually on their energy bills.
